Greetings from the office of the Principal!
Welcome to Crestridge International Studies and Dual Language Magnet Center. My name is Marjorie Schmid, and I am the proud principal of this magnet school of excellence. Our International and Global studies magnet is evident in the rich diversity within our student body. We celebrate the fact that we have students from many different nationalities, cultures, religions, and socio-economic backgrounds. We share varied interests and talents and enjoy learning together.
The Crestridge staff is dedicated to providing quality education for our Kindergarten through sixth grade students. We meet together regularly to plan and evaluate our progress through our EXCELS school improvement planning. Staff members attend inservices and workshops designed to keep them informed about effective teaching practices and current trends. Many staff members have traveled and studied abroad, familiarizing themselves with the international curriculum they teach.
Parents of kindergarteners entering Crestridge may apply for the Dual Language Program. In addition to the kindergarten and magnet curriculums, students receive bilingual instruction from English and Spanish-speaking teachers. As kindergarten students progress through the grades, they develop academic skills in both languages. When they leave Crestridge at the end of sixth grade these students will be bilingual and biliterate!
Crestridge students are also immersed in the study of eighteen different countries and international languages. The magnet curriculum has been designed by Crestridge staff to align with Nebraska Social Studies standards. The study of three to four countries per grade level is integrated throughout the curriculum. The study of other countries' economics, government, literature, music, art, and so much more provides rich discussion and discovery in our classrooms.
Students are introduced to Spanish and Mandarin Chinese languages in grades kindergarten through two. In grades three through six, students choose a language to concentrate on using the Rosetta Stone Language Program. Students learn to read, write, and speak with confidence, preparing them for language instruction in seventh grade.
All of the school assemblies and programs at Crestridge are chosen with our International theme in mind. Students participate in field trips that enhance the grade level and magnet curriculum. Students in fifth and sixth grade have opportunities to travel to Washington D.C. and New York City to study first-hand what they've learned in our classrooms.
A vital component of our school of excellence is the support of our parents and community. Crestridge is fortunate to have many parent volunteers who donate their time working with students and sponsoring school activities. Through the work of our PTO and community partners, we have literally hundreds of parents involved in programs and projects each year.
Crestridge is fortunate to have as association with the Suburban Rotary Club of Omaha. Crestridge has been the beneficiary of many service projects conducted by Suburban Rotary. Many Rotarians have volunteered at activities and made generous donations to Crestridge students and staff.
Adopt-a-School partners have joined us in providing enriching experiences for students. Our partners, Burger King, Bag 'N Save, Gordman's Corporate Offices, UNO International Studies Department, Godfathers, Omaha State Bank, and Omaha Sister Cities Association are involved in the life of our school. Their businesses proudly display students' work, creative writing, and art. University of Nebraska at Omaha International Students visit Crestridge often, eating lunch with our students, visiting in classrooms, and sharing their countries and cultures in all-school assemblies.
We have been named a Magnet School of Excellence (2005-2006, 2006-2007, 2009-2010) and a Magnet School of Distinction by Magnet Schools of America (2011-2012). These are the top awards given by Magnet Schools of America and is based on a commitment to high academic standards, curriculum innovation, successful desegregation/diversity efforts and the consistent delivery of high quality education to all students. These are the top awards given by Magnet Schools of America and is based on a commitment to high academic standards, curriculum innovation, successful desegregation/diversity efforts and the consistent delivery of high quality education to all students. Crestridge has also been designated as an International Spanish Academy by the Spanish Embassy. Students and staff take great pride in these accolades.
Crestridge is a school of excellence because of all the great people involved in our school. Parents, community members, Adopt-A-School partners, and staff combine to provide a unique, high-quality learning experience for students. Crestridge students experience an A plus education that shows them the world, and prepares them to take their place in it!
