Biography:

Welcome to Kindergarten! My name is Cheryl Radcliff and I am excited to work with your child this year. I have been in the district since ’92 and have taught pre-kdg, 4th grade, ESL, and Kindergarten for the past 7 years. Kindergarten has been the most rewarding grade level for me. I enjoy watching the children grow and transform so much during this first year. It’s exciting and rewarding to go through this process with your child.

What to expect this year:

Kindergarten is a very busy year. The beginning of the year we will focus on identification of upper case and lower case letters and sounds. A rule of thumb is that these should be mastered around Christmastime. We start sight words right away and work on these throughout the year. By the end of the year a child is tested over 25 of them; although, we have learned twice as many.

In math we start out with patterns and progress through the year with number identification from 0 to 30, to measurement, time, money addition, subtraction, and geometry.

For science and social studies we cover a variety of thematic units. Since we are a global studies magnet center we also learn about the world and we cover the seven continents.

Your child will also go to “Special” teachers. They will have art, physical education, music, library, Spanish, and the counselor.

As you can see, we have a very busy day! I am looking forward to meeting you and your child and working together to make this a successful year

CLASSROOM NEWS:

Hope you are having a great summer! If you are thinking of back to school, then here are some things you can work on at home the next few weeks.
Practice the alphabet , both upper and lower case. Fridge magnets are great for this. Leap Frog makes a set that says the letter and its sound plus a song!!!
Have your child work on writing their name. Color and cut. They should also know the colors.Shapes- triangle, circle, rectangle, square. Numbers 0-10- say and recognize. Read, read, read. A great time to do this is before bed.

Safe walk to school night(Aug. 14)  is for children that walk to school. If your child rides a bus, or you will always pick them up then, you do not need to attend. This is just a meet and greet night.

Our first event I would love to see everyone at is Curriculum Night. We discuss the year's curriculum and we will have many handouts for you to take home.
